Abstract

The article seeks to analyze whether the unpunished exercise of political repression had a negative impact on the process of political change in Mexico in 2000, making it impossible to establish a quality democracy. The hypothesis suggests that political repression is a legacy of the authoritarian past that permeated the democratic transition phase, and that by continuing to be present during the so-called government of the alternation (2000-2006), it caused the failure of the instauration phase. Having contrasted the main movements of political and social nonconformity that were repressed by the Mexican State during the authoritarian regime and during the first democratically elected government, it can be concluded that political repression remained in place during the change of regimen, thereby determining democratic precariousness
