Abstract

A first version of this review was presented at the First International CIMIHUREEM Congress in 2023. La Cancerbera, Igor Venegas de Luca’s first book of poems, published in October 2023, was a finalist for the 2024 Santiago Municipal Literature Prize. Divided into five parts, each chapter is anchored to specific historical events. The book includes a note by poet Elvira Hernández, who won the 2024 National Literature Prize. The work challenges monolithic historical accounts and reflects a hopeless tone, addressing topics such as the 2019 social outbreak in Chile. In the “Epilogue,” the voices of the author and his father merge, symbolizing the continuity of pain. La Cancerbera mixes poetry, history, and reflection on collective pain, interweaving historical facts and personal experience.
