Abstract

Corruption is currently one of the most discussed phenomena in various sciences, particularly due to its impact on the economic development process of countries. Given its relevance, several socio-economic factors have been related to corruption in the studies carried out, one of them being the level of income, which can be represented by the socio-economic classes of the countries. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between self-reported social class and perception of corruption in Brazil. To this end, we used data from the World Values Survey (WVS) in its 7th wave, for 2018, and estimated a Probit econometric model. The results show that the Brazilian middle class has a higher perception of corruption than other social classes in the country. This result can be explained by historical and cultural factors in the country, as well as the possible relative loss of purchasing power of the middle class during the research period.
